Climate action

Overview

The impacts of climate change continue to affect communities throughout the North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii. Over the past few decades, communities have experienced first-hand the destructive effects of climate change in many different ways, including unprecedented drought and heat waves that have led to major marine die-offs and other catastrophes.

CFN member communities are committed to minimizing climate change impacts by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, as well as becoming climate resilient, adaptable and secure.

The Coastal First Nations Declaration for Clean Energy & Climate Adaptation is our commitment to become climate resilient, adaptable, secure, and non-emitting. We uphold our commitment to the wellbeing of future generations through this declaration.

A Clean Energy Future

Coastal First Nations are working with member communities to achieve a clean energy future. We’re working to enhance local economies and protect the natural environment by reducing dependency on fossil fuel. Initiatives include community-based clean energy projects and ultra-energy efficient new homes.

We’re also working with communities that still rely on diesel—an expensive and carbon intensive fuel that causes air pollution—to find alternatives ways to heat and power their homes and infrastructure. By improving air quality and reducing our contribution to climate change, these clean energy initiatives support healthy, energy efficient communities.
