Funding Our Marine Vision
Overview
Stretching from northern Vancouver Island to the Canada-Alaska border, the Great Bear Sea is one of the richest and most productive cold-water ecoregions on Earth. Home to abundant marine life, including herring, salmon, whales, dolphins, seabirds and kelp forests, these ocean waters are the source of sustenance, culture and livelihoods for all who call the coast home.
First Nations have cared for these ocean waters for thousands of years, and will continue to do so for all future generations.
sustainable Financing for Coastal Marine Management
In this interview, Wuikinuxv Chief Councillor Abúk Danielle Shaw speaks about the vital work to secure long-term, sustainable financing for marine protection and management.
Great Bear Sea Project Finance for Permanence (PFP)
In 2024, CFN member Nations, Na̲nwak̲olas Council and Coast Funds, along with the federal and provincial governments and philanthropic investors, announced the historic Great Bear Sea Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative.
With a total investment of $335 million in funding for marine protection and sustainable management on the North Pacific Coast, the Great Bear Sea PFP promises a new era of collaborative governance in marine conservation and stewardship. The innovative financing project will ensure CFN member communities will have access to durable, long-term funding to care for our marine territories and support sustainable economic development on the coast.
PFPs are a proven tool for conservation finance that blend public and private investment to deliver long-term conservation and economic benefits. This investment will help protect important marine ecosystems while creating thousands of new jobs and supporting healthy communities over the coming decades.
The Great Bear Sea PFP provides funding for implementation of ongoing marine planning initiatives, including the Great Bear Sea MPA Network and the Marine Plan Partnership (MaPP). These collaborative initiatives between our Nations and other governments, along with multiple industry and conservation partners, have already yielded co-developed plans to support healthy fisheries and sustainable marine economies, protect ecosystems and important cultural sites, improve food security and increase coastal resilience.
