Coastal First Nations is a unique alliance of nine Nations living on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii.

Each Nation has its own distinct culture, governance and territory.

The Coastal First Nations Great Bear Initiative is a unique alliance of nine distinct First Nations working together: To protect our coast and improve the quality of life in our communities.

Our member nations include Wuikinuxv, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xaixais, Nuxalk, Gitga’at, Metlakatla, Old Massett, Skidegate, and Council of the Haida Nation.

First Nations have lived in the Great Bear Rainforest for thousands of years. Our culture and livelihoods are deeply intertwined with its forests, rivers and sea.

Iconic species such as Pacific coastal wolves and the rare white Spirit Bear are found only here. Grizzly bears, black bears, six million migratory birds and rare plant and animal species share its land and waters.

The North Pacific Coast is a rich, varied and fragile part of the natural world. The connection of land and sea with people has given rise to our ancient Northwest cultures.

We recognize this life source is under threat like never before and that all people must be held accountable.

Coastal First Nations hold a strong connection to our land ongoing since time immemorial. Today we continue to maintain Aboriginal Rights and Title Rights to the lands in our Traditional Territories.

Aboriginal Rights and Title affirm our right to our Traditional Territories. And our right to maintain and protect the resources within our lands and waters.

The Coastal First Nation Great Bear Initiative promotes community self-sufficiency and sustainable economic development on BC’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii.

Our communities are working together to build a strong, conservation-based economy that recognizes our Title and Rights, and protects our culture and ecosystems.
