WHY A CONSERVATION-BASED APPROACH?

Coastal First Nations are leading a strategic and forward-looking path to our future.

Working together, First Nations are branching out from an economy that relied for too long on the overexploitation of our natural resources.

SUSTAINABLE FORESTS

Over a decade ago, Coastal First Nations began exploring ways to generate income from our old growth forests without cutting more trees.

Coniferous boughs are abundant in our Traditional Territories so the idea to craft wild tree essential oils was born.

CLEAN ENERGY

The Coastal First Nations are working with member communities to achieve a clean energy future. We’re working to enhance local economies and protect the natural environment by reducing dependency on fossil fuel.

COMMUNITY CLEAN ENERGY PROJECTS

In Klemtu, the Kitasoo/Xai Xais own and operate their own small storage hydro-electric plant. It delivers clean electricity to the community year round. The system has reached capacity in recent years and Klemtu is seeking to make significant upgrades to ensure an adequate supply of clean electricity in the future.

ENGAGING COMMUNITIES

First Nations are engaging community members in energy literacy to help foster good conservation practices. Engagement activities take a playful approach, involving children and parents in skits and other activities

ULTRA-ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES

The Coastal First Nations Great Bear Initiative supports communities to participate in the Ultra-Energy Efficient, Culturally Appropriate New Homes program.

SHELLFISH AQUACULTURE

Through sustainable shellfish aquaculture, coastal First Nations are creating jobs to support local economies without depleting valuable resources and ecosystems.
